Our mission
MASI/Safe Harbor's mission is to ensure the highest quality, healthiest seafood is delivered to consumers while striving to source products from sustainable and eco-friendly fisheries. Through the testing and traceability program, MASI/Safe Harbor empowers consumers by providing otherwise unknown information regarding fish origin, fishing method and maximum mercury levels for each species. MASI/Safe Harbor Certification eliminates any consumer guesswork by certifying that each fish tested has mercury levels well below the FDA limit.
About us
Founded in 2002, Micro Analytical Systems, Inc. (MASI) was born from the need to address the mercury in fish issue in a positive manner to consumers while staying cognizant of retail and fishing industry needs. Equipped with a proprietary testing technology exclusive to MASI and capable of accurately measuring mercury concentrations within specific species of fish, the Safe Harbor® brand was created to empower consumers by identifying the maximum level of mercury concentration in every fish bearing the MASI/Safe Harbor seal. Fish certified through the testing process are sold with the assurance that the product has been screened for mercury to published Safe Harbor standards, surpassing the standards set by the U.S. government including the FDA’s recommended mercury threshold of one part per million (1.0 ppm) for all varieties of fish.
To date, MASI/Safe Harbor’s testing system is the only available process capable of testing every retailer or supplier’s fish. Sensitive to the part per billion and accurate to +/- 5% error margin, globally MASI/Safe Harbor has conducted over 300,000 tests on fish for mercury concentrations and continues to test more fish and seafood for mercury each year than any government or private entity in the world. For the first time, large volumes of fish and seafood products can be tested quickly with accurate results at a relatively low cost.
